Hello! Welcome to my up and down, inside and out, constantly changing world. This blog is a personal journal about how, after being hospitalized and diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (Type 1) on September 23, 2005, I am re-learning how to live and laugh again. I am bipolar; but it is not the only thing that defines me. I am also an educator and a researcher, a wife, mother, sister, and daughter. I created this blog with the hope that it might help others realize that they were not alone in the struggle to manage this complex illness. It took me a while to gather the courage to blog, and I am so glad I finally did. It is helping me to make meaning about the things in my life that don’t always make sense, and to celebrate when they do. Writing is my mental yoga – a ritual and exercise for clearing out what’s in my head while figuring out how best to say it. This picture is of me and my son, O, on the coast of Big Sur. I like that I am standing between him and the powerful sea. It looks like I am keeping him safe, but actually, I remember feeling that he was protecting me. It was my holding onto him that kept me from falling over the edge.
